A Breton Bande Dessinée? Graphic Mosaics of Brittany

This article uses the figure of mosaic to explore multiple ways in which Breton creators bande dessinée have engaged with cutural, social and political questions from 1940s twenty-first century. Graphic works published magazine O Lo Lê, created by Herri Ronan Caouissin later revived early 1970s, offered nostalgic images a fantasized past, form cultural propaganda based on myths Celtic ancestors, literary forefathers such as Auguste Brizeux, politics provincialism. In second half 1970s 1980s, amid calls for internal decolonization, BD scene became more varied, depicting emigration, unemployment unrest while giving voice dissent deconstructing clichés picturesque localism. Finally, selection contemporary texts offers space re-examining Frenchness through interplay between different languages cultures, new models relationality informed postcolonial ecocritical frameworks. As hybrid, dynamic art form, emerges key contributor construction deconstruction community group identities.
